Technically, there's no deadline to apply for Elterngeld. You can apply months after your baby is born.
But here's the catch: Elterngeld is only paid retroactively for 3 months maximum. Apply in month 5? You'll only get paid starting from month 2. Month 1 is lost forever.
This is why timing matters.
The sweet spot: Apply within the first 3 months of your baby's life. This way, you'll receive Elterngeld from month 1 onwards.
Even better: Start preparing your application before birth. Gather documents, fill out what you can, and have everything ready. After birth, you just add the birth certificate and submit.
You can't officially submit before birth (you need the birth certificate), but you can have 90% of the work done.
Be prepared to wait. Processing typically takes 4-8 weeks, sometimes longer depending on your local office and their backlog.
This means your first payment might arrive 2-3 months after birth, even if you apply immediately.
Tip: Ask your employer about an 'Elterngeld-Vorschuss' (advance). Some companies will front you the money while you wait for the official payments to start.
Processing time varies by state and workload, typically 4-8 weeks. Missing documents cause delays. Tip: Submit a complete application and call the Elterngeldstelle after 4 weeks if you haven't heard back. Elterngeld is paid retroactively.
Elterngeld is paid monthly in advance, usually at the beginning or middle of the month (depending on the state). The first payment is made retroactively for all previous life months after approval. After that, you receive automatic monthly payments.
